Recently, the California Supreme Court upheld Proposition 8, a controversial measure banning same-sex marriage passed by voters in November 2008. The current ruling states that the ban is constitutional, but the state's 18,000 existing same-sex marriages will stand. Dr. Phil and his panel of distinguished guests continue their discussion of this controversial topic. Joining the debate are discrimination attorney Gloria Allred, president of the Human Rights Campaign Joe Solmonese, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Pastor Jim Garlow, president of National Organization of Marriage Maggie Gallagher and co-campaign manager for the Yes on 8 Campaign Jeff Flint. The conversation gets heated as Dr. Phil takes comments and questions from his audience, which is evenly divided over the issue that has many Californians protesting in the streets. mind your own business!

Are we that nosey as a society that we care what other people do.   Why do you care what someone else does.  Why does it matter if another couple is gay and wants to marry? how does this affect you!  worry about your own life and marriage.  If you dont' believe in gay marriages then don't marry gay, its that simple.   next we'll be a society that chooses your wife or husband for you!  we have so many other important things we could be worrying about then this crap.  as a society we need to grow up!!

As a christian, I do not feel that I should  judge people on what they feel or do. I leave that up to God.

Same sex marrigae

I think same sex marriage  is totally each person's choice. It is wrong in the bible but if these couples choose to marry or co-habitate then so be it, and they have made peace between them and their God then live on. God is a forgiving God and if they are living for him in all other perspective of their lives I don't have a problem with it. Only thing I do have a problem is bringing children into the situation because kids and their peers are cruel and they will have to deal with this also..Also I think same sexes  and a man and woman living together out of marriage isn't any different and disobeying what the bible says..So there is a very thin line of right or worng. And those that are against gays and how they live, people need to look in their own back yards before throwing out judgement. I work with gays, and I have gays in my family, but I don't judge them..In the end we all will be judged so we all can stand a good house cleaning for ourselves and not worry about someone else and how they are conducting their lives..America needs to treat any couple whether gay or hetero the same in insurance and benefits etc..Let's all get along, Life is too short..

05/29 Same-Sex Marriage Reaction

Quote From: haileew

I watch Dr Phil every now & then depending what the show is about. I have alot of respect for his teaching & think he has a great personality. I am a born again christian & I have to agree with the fact that people in the media have a good opportunity to lead by example & I know that they will be blessed for it. This is the time to take a respectful stand against accepting the gay 'rights' I know a few gay people and they are really nice people I would only treat them with kindness & understanding as this is God's will but this doesnt negate the fact that according to God it is NOT the way to behave. One day every knee witll confess & every knee will bow so until then I think it is MOST important to be leading the way in any way you can even if to everyone else you are 'wrong' and 'just one of those christian people' we get so much grief for standing firm & strong on the Lords word & commands yet everyone else demands to have their rights met even when they are not how the creator wants or made them. I pray that this discussion sheds some real truth on our Saviour and his truths.
Don't expect Dr Phil to take any kind of stand against the homosexual lifestyle. He has claimed, on several past shows on this issue, that homosexuals are born, "hardwired" is the way he puts it, with a sexual preference for their own gender. Don't know where he picked up this notion.

tolerance or persicusion

watching your show today it is a strong reminder at how viscous our world can be.  you see i am a christian and i support gay marriage; here is why

if christians truly believe the bible god says only he can ORDAIN a marriage therefore what difference does the piece of paper make to anyone.  there is surely quite a few heterosexual marriage's he doesn't ordain.

most important is that if as christians we remember that jesus christ died on a cross for our sins and even after that did not demand that we follow him or serve him.  JESUS gave us CHOICE. JESUS  gave us compassion and tolerance.  MAYBE WE SHOULD TRY AND REALLY FOLLOW HIS LEAD1

Education is the Key...

Felicia... you summed it up for me.

But I would like to add the debate is really whether someone believes that being gay is chosen or if they are born gay.  There is scientific evidence that they are born that way - you cannot ignore that.  So... if they are born that way then it is wrong to condemn them.  TAKE RELIGION OUT OF IT!  If that is possible.. and look at it for what it is.  If you educate yourselves and not take the word of a book that may or may not be true then you will see how dumb it is to be against someone that does not affect your life in the least.  What two consenting adults do in thier own bedroom is no ones business.  People need to get thier judgemental noses out of it and worry about thier own selves and own relationships.

A lot of the Christians on here posting so far seem like great people and I'm glad that many of them do not hate gay people or treat them bad.  But if you can take religion out of it you will see it for what it is.  Yes I am agnostic.... and I don't believe sleeping with someone of the same sex is a sin.  I don't care what anyone does but my darn self unless of course it is hurting someone.  Let people who love each other marry!  There is so much hate in the world... some people want to take away love.  It's sad.  Again... religion being the reason of "marriage".  Get over it and let people live thier own lives!

Oh, please!

This is one of those times when America confuses me. You are refusing a very basic right to these people because of something they were born with. It's discrimination, no matter how much you try to pretend that it's not; it's ugly and it's nasty. I am straight, I want to get married someday and have a family and I would never want to tell another person that they don't have the right to do the same. What business is it of mine?
You should be able to marry whoever you want to, as long as you're not hurting anybody, it doesn't affect my life in any way. If marriage is so sacred, why is it that you can get wasted in Vegas, go to a drive-thru wedding chapel and marry the guy you met at the casino earlier that same night? As long as you're not two men or two women, it's okay? I really hope they will reconsider their decision in the future and give everyone the right to be with the person they love.

relious freedom!

Religion seems to be a major point on whether or not same-sex marriage should be legal. America was formed on the basis of freedom of religion. Its in the Bill of Rights. Yes, some people may believe God didn't want same-sex marriage, but that is for that individual to decide. And for the government to tell us we can't marry based on a religious belief, that is going against our rights as citizens of the United States.

05/29 Same-Sex Marriage Reaction

I cannot believe I watched all these bible thumping morons again. I must be masochistic, or I hurt my back and I'm laid up on the couch. Anyone that tries to inflict their religious beliefs on me is evil. Live and let live. What goes on between consenting adults is none of your business. There is no debate. Marriage is a human right. I do respect anyone that does not believe in human rights. Religion has no place in government, or in my life. Sanity, fairness and love will prevail...

05/29 Same-Sex Marriage Reaction

I would like to hear one argument against gay marriage that is not based in religion.  This country was founded primarily on freedom of religion and separation of church and state. Marriage has been established as a fundamental right; therefore it is unconstitutional to deny it to a group  of people based only on religious beliefs.
